Containment as a Way to Manage Chaos

A client of mine, who is an artist, has recently begun making boxes of different sizes in her studio. The boxes are of various sizes and shapes, and made from an assortment of materials including magazine images and handmade paper. This person has been particularly overwhelmed lately. In retrospect, when reflecting with her about the process of making the boxes, she stated, “They are like little time containers.” She needed to feel less overwhelmed and more in control of spending her time doing the tasks that needed to be accomplished. Something in her knew that these boxes could be a metaphor for managing her time. We both found it fascinating to know that, unconsciously, her psyche had found a way to make order out of chaos.
